A neighborhood located on the southeaster of the city’s urban core is the Montopolis neighborhood. Montopolis encompasses part of Austin, Texas with a zip code 78742. Montopolis is located on the southeast of Lake Lady Bird and is bounded on the west by Grove Street and the Pleasant Valley neighborhood to the south part going to Texas State Highway 71 and the Southeast Austin neighborhood. Metropolis is located adjacent to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and is located in the city council District 3.
Montopolis was established in 1830 as one of the separate communities southeast of Downtown Austin going to the south-central Travis County when Jessie C. Tannehill built a casino and laid out a townsite to be originally called “Montopolis” because of its location on the top of the hill. Before its establishment, the whole area was once home to the Native American Tonkowda tribe who lived along the Colorado River which was part of the El Camino Real de Los Tejas. When the Civil War ended the area became a freedmen’s town which means home to newly freed slaves who worked as sharecroppers.
During the early 20th century, the neighborhood saw a large resident of Mexican immigrants. Despite the proximity, Austin waited until 1952 to partially annex the Montopolis area which wasn’t completely annexed until the 1970s. This working-class neighborhood has been one of the poorest neighborhoods in Austin with about two of every five residents who live in poverty.
