Downtown Austin is located on the north bank of the Colorado River and it is the central business district of Austin, Texas. The approximate borders of Downtown are the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the University of Texas and the Lamar Boulevard in Interstate 35 to the east is the Lady Bird Lake to the south.
It is the area where the city’s high-rise buildings are nested in, as well as the center of every government and business for the region. Downtown Austin is currently experiencing a building boom with lots of condos and high-rise towers that are being built. The top three tallest condo buildings west of the Mississippi River are all located in downtown Austin which are The Austonian, 360 Condominiums, and The Independent.
The Downton Austin began with the Republic of Texas and President Mirabeau B Lamar during the 1830s. Lamar tapped between Shoal Creek to the west and Waller Creek to the east. Waller and the team of surveyors have developed Austin’s first city plan that is commonly known as the Waller Plan. This divided the site into a simpler grid pattern on its 640-acre property with 14 blocks running in both directions. Much of this original design is still intact in downtown Austin up to this day.
